Peshawar, January 01, 2024 — In a historic move, Sobia Khan, a member of Pakistan’s transgender community, is breaking barriers and challenging societal norms by running for political office in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024. Hailing from Peshawar, Sobia has submitted her nomination papers for the provincial assembly from constituency PK-84.
As the first transwoman to contest elections in her area, Sobia is taking a bold step to advocate for the rights of her community, which has long faced discrimination and violence. Despite holding a bachelor’s degree and completing 14 years of education, she highlights the challenges of unemployment and societal acceptance faced by many transpersons in Pakistan.
Sobia’s manifesto includes a commitment to raise funds for women engaged in domestic work, enabling them to stay at home and care for their children without financial worries. Her political aspirations also extend to championing the rights of the oppressed and holding oppressors accountable.
The decision to enter politics is seen as a historic moment for the transgender community in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Sobia draws strength from her family’s unwavering support and the backing of her community. Her candidacy is not only rooted in personal conviction but also in the belief that it can bring positive change for her people.
In addition to her electoral campaign, Sobia has filed a case in the Peshawar High Court, advocating for separate representation for transgender individuals on reserved seats in the National and provincial assemblies of Pakistan. She emphasizes the need for inclusive political participation and equal representation for her community.
Sobia also addresses systemic issues, such as the lack of gender-specific counters at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) office in Peshawar. Her activism extends beyond electoral aspirations, reflecting a commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
As Sobia Khan blazes a trail in Pakistani politics, her journey symbolizes resilience, determination, and a transformative push for the rights and representation of the transgender community in the country.
